WellSpan Health and Philips Forge Strategic Alliance to Advance Imaging Technology
Community health system WellSpan Health has embarked on a groundbreaking seven-year strategic alliance with Philips. This partnership is aimed at revolutionizing advanced imaging technology across WellSpan’s extensive network. Together, they plan to develop new AI and technology tools that promise to enhance healthcare delivery.
Philips Technology to Empower WellSpan Network
Philips’ state-of-the-art technology will be integrated across WellSpan’s comprehensive network, which includes 12 hospitals, diagnostic imaging centers, and ambulatory surgery centers located in central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. Through a long-term commercial agreement, Philips will serve as WellSpan’s preferred provider for various modalities, such as CT, MR, digital X-ray, ultrasound, and image-guided therapy.
The agreement is designed with a structured approach to technology lifecycle management. It aligns equipment, services, training, and upgrade planning into a unified framework, ensuring seamless operations and advancements in medical technology.
A First-of-Its-Kind Collaboration in the U.S.
This alliance is notable as it marks Philips’ inaugural research and innovation collaboration with a U.S. healthcare system. WellSpan will act as both a proving ground and co-developer, working alongside Philips to co-create cutting-edge products and features that push the boundaries of healthcare innovation.
The research aims to explore how artificial intelligence and digital tools can enhance workflow efficiency, reduce costs, and improve overall healthcare delivery.
WellSpan’s Vision and Strategic Partnerships
Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., RN, president and CEO of WellSpan, explained to Fierce Healthcare that this strategic partnership aligns perfectly with WellSpan’s broader innovation strategy. This includes collaborating with select technology companies and adhering to the WellSpan 2030 strategic plan. In September, WellSpan expanded its partnership with General Catalyst to scale artificial intelligence tools, and it continues to collaborate with startups like Hippocratic AI and Aidoc, as well as Amazon Web Services for cloud and analytics technology.
WellSpan has evolved its technology strategy to focus on integrating AI and technology beyond pilot projects. “We’ve been innovating pretty hard over the last five years to make sure we can streamline our healthcare system, make things easier for our patients and really personalize care,” Gapstur noted.
Driving Innovation in Community Health Systems
Gapstur emphasized the importance of equipping community health systems with the latest technology and AI tools. The collaboration with Philips represents a significant step in achieving this goal, ensuring that community providers have access to cutting-edge therapies and devices for accurate diagnoses.
The partnership positions WellSpan at the forefront of healthcare diagnostics and imaging. Potential areas for future innovation include the application of AI in imaging, AI-powered workflows, and the use of digital twins to advance imaging techniques and diagnostics.
Enhancing Patient Experience and Care Efficiency
Philips is working on innovative solutions, such as avatars for patients during scans, which aim to improve patient experience by providing calming, human-like interactions during procedures. Additionally, AI could play a crucial role in reducing scanning times and enhancing care efficiency. “We have some exciting ideas around AI-enabled care that I think could really be a differentiator,” Gapstur remarked.
Through this technology partnership, WellSpan aims to expand access to healthcare, particularly in rural areas, while alleviating the burden on clinical teams through AI and digital tools. The health system aims to reclaim more than 450,000 hours of work by 2026.
As WellSpan continues to simplify and personalize healthcare, the Philips partnership will serve as a cornerstone for delivering high-quality care to patients. “We’re not going to have 50 partners here at WellSpan – we’re going to have two, three, or four partners,” Gapstur concluded, highlighting Philips as a major platform in their patient and team interactions.
