Erlanger Health System Joins Forces with Prisma Health for a Promising Future
In a strategic move aimed at bolstering healthcare services in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Erlanger Health System has announced plans to partner with Prisma Health. This collaboration promises to create a formidable 27-hospital system, backed by a substantial $2 billion strategic capital commitment. This initiative is expected to greatly enhance medical services in the region.
A Vision for Enhanced Healthcare Access
The two nonprofit health systems revealed their signed non-binding memorandum of understanding, highlighting a shared vision to improve access to specialty care and invest in long-term capital projects. However, the timeline for finalizing the agreement remains undecided. The proposal requires approvals from Erlanger’s board of directors, its independent regulator, the local county commission, as well as other state and federal regulators.
Jim Coleman, CEO and president of Erlanger, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “By partnering with Prisma Health, we will be able to accelerate our vision and keep Erlanger at the forefront of medicine.” This collaboration aims at securing “mission-critical programs” such as southeast Tennessee’s only Level 1 trauma center and other safety-net operations.
Growth and Development Amidst Challenges
Facing a tightening operating environment, this partnership is seen as a pivotal step for growth. The Chattanooga-based Erlanger reported a 2025 operating revenue of approximately $1.6 billion, housing around 1,000 beds across its seven hospitals, including Children’s Hospital. The flagship, Erlanger Baroness Hospital, affiliated with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, is a teaching hospital that serves a vast 50,000 square mile region spanning four states.
In recent times, Erlanger has improved its operating performance and liquidity, prompting Fitch Ratings to upgrade its Issuer Default Rating from “A-” to “A”. This underscores Erlanger’s robust position in the Chattanooga market, where it holds nearly twice the market share of its closest competitor.
An Attractive Partnership for the Future
Prisma Health, based in Greenville, South Carolina, operates 20 acute care and specialty hospitals, reporting an operating revenue of $7.4 billion for fiscal year 2025. Employing over 32,000 staff, Prisma Health’s strength lies in its “geographically focused strategy,” which emphasizes leveraging regional expertise to deliver patient-centric care.
Erlanger’s leadership embarked on a strategic board discussion over a year ago to evaluate whether to remain independent or to seek a partnership. After a rigorous process, Prisma Health emerged as the ideal partner to help “accelerate our plans for the future”.
Commitment to Continuity and Growth
Should the agreement proceed, Prisma Health plans to establish a regional headquarters in East Tennessee, with Erlanger’s CEO, Jim Coleman, serving as regional CEO. Erlanger would maintain its leadership structure and have significant representation on Prisma’s corporate board.
Reassuringly, Erlanger has committed to retaining employees and medical staff, ensuring no disruption to patient appointments or services during the transition. The partnership will honor Erlanger Baroness Hospital’s academic affiliations and is expected to enrich academic partnerships, continuing programs for educating and training medical professionals.
