Apple solves the bill-splitting headache with its new Siri in Camera feature

Apple’s Siri in Camera: Revolutionizing the Dreaded Group Bill Split

There’s nothing worse than going to dinner with a large group of friends, refusing to drink to save money, but still having to pay for your friends’ espresso martinis when the group decides to split the bill evenly. You don’t want to be cheap and keep everyone waiting while you recalculate the bill. Apple now has a solution to this problem, which it revealed at WWDC 2026.

The perennial awkwardness of splitting a bill at a group dinner may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to Apple’s latest innovation. In a bid to simplify and streamline this often uncomfortable process, Apple introduced a groundbreaking feature at the WWDC 2026. This new capability, integrated into the iPhone’s Camera app through Siri Mode, allows users to efficiently manage bill splitting without the hassle of manual calculations or third-party apps.

The New Feature: How It Works

With the new feature, you can point your iPhone’s camera at a receipt. Then Siri Mode in the Camera app will make each item selectable so you can track who received each item and send people separate Apple Cash payment requests based on what they actually ordered. Ideally, this feature should make bill splitting a less awkward and time-consuming experience.

“If you’re grabbing a bite to eat with friends and pointing your iPhone at the bill, then [you can] select what you ordered to split the bill with Apple Cash,” Sebastien Marineau-Mes, Apple’s vice president of software, said during Apple’s presentation.

Why Apple’s Solution Stands Out

This type of bill splitting was already available with apps like SplitWise or Tab, but in reality, these products have never been more popular (at least in my experience; no one has ever offered to use one of these tools). Since Apple’s payment features exist within the architecture of native apps like iMessage, it seems more natural to send someone a payment request through an app that they don’t have to go out of their way to download.

Apple’s approach leverages its robust ecosystem, ensuring that the feature is seamlessly integrated into existing iPhone functionalities. As a result, the process of requesting and sending payments becomes intuitive and convenient, making it more likely that users will adopt and use the service regularly.

Additional Features: Beyond Bill Splitting

You can also use another similar feature of Siri Mode in Camera while you dine. Instead of pointing your camera at the bill, you can use it to see estimated nutritional information on the foods you eat. This additional functionality underscores Apple’s commitment to providing versatile tools that enhance user experience in practical ways.
