With Medicare’s GLP-1 “bridge” soon to be available, Walmart is expanding its weight management support offerings for consumers

Walmart Enhances Support for Medicare’s Upcoming GLP-1 Bridge Program

With Medicare’s GLP-1 Bridge Program taking effect next week, Walmart is rolling out new support measures to help beneficiaries understand their weight management options.

Empowering Customers with Knowledge and Resources

As part of their new initiative, Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies will offer educational materials about weight management, including details about prescription coverage options and resources that may be available to them. This includes one-on-one meetings with pharmacists who can discuss next steps.

Walmart customers can get help navigating government options and other resources, the company said in an announcement, which will be particularly important as the bridge model goes live.

Understanding the GLP-1 Bridge Program

Under Bridge, eligible Medicare Part D enrollees can purchase certain GLP-1 medications for a $50 copayment. The demonstration runs from July 1st to December 31st, 2027, and the costs are subsidized by the federal government. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has postponed another GLP-focused model due to insurer skepticism.

Reaching Underserved Communities

Kevin Host, senior vice president of health and wellness at Walmart, told Fierce Healthcare that the company operates approximately 4,600 pharmacies at Walmart stores in 49 states and Puerto Rico, with 4,000 of those locations in underserved areas.

This will enable the team to reach a broad range of people who may need help navigating Medicare’s new GLP-1 insurance options, he said. This is particularly true since in many rural or underserved regions there may not be access to a pharmacy or doctor.

“Our Walmart mantra simply helps people save money and live better,” Host said. “Many pharmacies across the country are closing […] and many of them isolate themselves in these more vulnerable communities. In some of these communities we are sometimes the only pharmacy.”

Integrating Digital Tools for a Seamless Experience

The program also allows customers to learn more about their insurance options using digital tools. In April, Walmart announced it would expand weight management services available through its Better Care Services platform, which connects users to virtual care, nutrition and pharmacy programs in a one-stop shop.

The new offering goes hand in hand with Better Care Services expanding its options to provide a range of solutions for people taking GLP-1.

The host said the support tools are designed to meet members where they are on their weight management journey. Some may only need a consultation, while others may need more hands-on options.

Enhancing Personal Health Management

For example, he said customers can connect to Walmart’s Everyday Health Signals tool, which, when members opt-in and opt-in, tracks their shopping habits and offers healthier alternatives to choose from. The program also includes a Nutrition Hub that offers healthy recipes.

People who connect to the Nutrition Hub can have all necessary ingredients automatically added to their shopping cart online, making the shopping experience easier, Host said.

Additionally, if a patient reaches the point where they need or want drug therapy, Walmart can help them find a primary care doctor if needed, he said.

“And as soon as they are prescribed therapy, our pharmacists are of course there,” he said.
