End of Life for Pixel 6 and 6 Pro: What You Need to Know

With the start of the Android 17 QPR2 Beta today, Google confirmed that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will reach End of Life before that December release.

Background on Pixel 6 and 6 Pro

Launched in October 2021, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro were initially expected to receive three years of Android updates followed by two additional years of security patches. However, in a move that delighted users, Google extended the device’s lifespan in 2024, promising five full years of updates. This decision underscored Google’s commitment to providing robust support for its flagship devices.

Upcoming Updates and End of Life Announcement

Regarding the QPR2 Beta, Google announced that Pixel 6 and 6 Pro users would not receive this OTA update as the devices are approaching their End of Life. The Android 17 QPR1 beta series will be the final update for these models, marking a significant milestone in their lifecycle.

Android 17 QPR1 is scheduled to roll out to existing Pixel devices in early September, and it is anticipated to debut with the Pixel 11 series in late August.

Final Updates for Pixel 6 Series

Despite reaching End of Life, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will still receive several updates before the end of their support period. Users can expect the August security patch, the September Pixel Drop/QPR1, and the October security patch. These updates ensure that the devices remain secure and functional until the official end of support.

Continued Support for Pixel 6a

In contrast, the Pixel 6a will continue to receive updates until July 2027, reflecting Google’s ongoing dedication to supporting its broader range of devices and ensuring users of the 6a model can enjoy a longer period of enhancements and security patches.
