Exploring Android 17 QPR1: New Status Bar Icon Changes
This month, Android 17 QPR1 has been officially released, bringing with it some intriguing changes to the status bar icons, particularly on Pixel devices. These updates, while subtle, have sparked curiosity and discussions among Android enthusiasts and users worldwide.
Key Changes in Status Bar Icons
One of the most noticeable alterations is the change in the silent or mute icon. Previously depicted as a crossed-out speaker, it has now been transformed into a bell icon. This modification might be an accidental regression since Google had switched from a bell to a speaker icon in Android 14. Interestingly, this change was not observed during the Android 17 QPR1 Beta phase and only appeared with the stable OTA update this week.
Additionally, the speaker icon remains active in the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5. Meanwhile, the switcher at the top of the volume slider continues to use the bell icon, adding to the ambiguity of whether the change was intentional or a temporary glitch.
Additional Changes: VPN Icon
Another icon that has undergone a transformation is the VPN icon. It now appears much thicker and filled in, a change that also debuted with the stable release. These updates contribute to the speculation about whether these tweaks were planned or accidental.
It remains to be seen if these changes will be reversed in future updates. If they were indeed mistakes, Google might address them in subsequent releases, potentially with the upcoming QPR2 update slated for December. As of now, Android 17 QPR1 has not yet been rolled out for the Pixel 11 series.
