A pattern is emerging among the people who have already made it big. They’re rolling up their sleeves again, seemingly out of fear of missing AI’s defining moment and probably out of the irresistible temptation to make more money – possibly even more.

The Shift Back to the Trenches

Tom Blomfield, co-founder of GoCardless and Monzo and a former Y Combinator Group Partner, recently announced his decision to take a leave of absence to join Anthropic’s computing team. Notably, he will not assume an executive role but rather a technical position. This move underscores a growing trend among tech veterans who are eager to engage directly with the latest advancements in artificial intelligence.

Joining Forces with AI Pioneers

Blomfield is not alone in this endeavor. Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger joined Anthropic as chief product officer in 2024. Similarly, Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI who later spearheaded AI initiatives at Tesla and created Eureka Labs, became a part of Anthropic’s pre-training team. Both have echoed sentiments that the upcoming years in the realm of large language models (LLMs) will be particularly transformative.

Entrepreneurs Forging New Paths

While some are joining established AI labs, others are creating their own ventures. Chamath Palihapitiya, known as the “SPAC king,” has taken on his first full-time role in a decade as CEO of 8090 Labs, an AI coding startup. His company recently secured a $135 million Series A round led by Salesforce Ventures, marking a significant shift from his previous boardroom-focused endeavors.

New Ventures in AI Innovation

Eric Wu, former leader of Opendoor, also embarked on a new journey with the launch of NavigateAI. This AI “co-pilot” for construction workers raised $25 million in seed funding. Wu emphasized the importance of engaging with AI advancements, expressing that he would regret not participating in this technological wave if he looked back a decade from now.

The Allure of a Flat Hierarchy

The enthusiasm for participating in AI’s nascent stages is further highlighted by the job titles adopted by these seasoned professionals. Anthropic and OpenAI have adopted a non-hierarchical approach with the designation “Technical Staff Member” for their technical teams. This is the title now held by Blomfield and was also embraced by Peter Bailis, who left his role as CTO of Workday to join Anthropic earlier this year.
