Google’s Commitment to Korea: Building an AI Campus
As part of this vision, Google is set to construct an AI Campus in the Republic of Korea. The AI Campus will initially focus on collaborations with research-oriented institutions such as Seoul National University (SNU), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and the ministry’s three AI Bio Innovation Hubs. These partnerships will leverage Google’s models to drive innovation in areas like life sciences, energy, weather, and climate. For example:
- AlphaEvolve – A coding agent powered by Gemini, designed for optimizing advanced algorithms. This technology has already demonstrated positive impacts in computer science and mathematics, with promising applications in drug discovery and energy.
- AlphaGenome – An AI model that aids scientists in understanding how mutations in human DNA sequences affect gene functions, thereby accelerating genomic biology research and enhancing disease understanding.
- AlphaFold – Already utilized by over 85,000 researchers in Korea, there’s potential to further accelerate AI-powered predictions for proteins, DNA, and RNA.
- AI Co-Scientist – A multi-agent AI system acting as a virtual research assistant, aiding researchers in brainstorming and testing hypotheses. This tool shows significant promise in biomedical applications, supporting the Ministry’s AI Scientist Project.
- WeatherNext – This collaboration aims to bolster Korea’s energy and sustainability goals by predicting and analyzing extreme weather impacts and optimizing renewable energy in grids.
Developing AI Talent and Collaborating on Security
Realizing AI’s full potential requires investing in people and building responsibly. To nurture the next generation of Korean AI talent, Google is opening doors to connect with Google DeepMind, offering internship opportunities for Korean students. This aligns with Google’s broader regional commitment, including the recent milestone of providing 50,000 AI Essentials scholarships to equip job seekers with essential skills.
Moreover, in line with the Frontier AI Safety Commitments made at the AI Seoul Summit, Google will collaborate with the Korean AI Safety Institute (AISI) on research and best practices to ensure AI technologies are developed responsibly.
Building on the AlphaGo Legacy
