Apple is finally catching up with Siri, but the goalposts are moving again

Siri AI: A Step Forward for Apple, But the Race is On

While Apple’s Siri AI has recently made strides towards fulfilling its promise as a genuinely helpful personal assistant, the landscape of AI assistants is evolving swiftly. As expectations shift, Apple is demonstrating an unwillingness to remain passive in this dynamic industry.

Siri AI: A 2024 Perspective

Siri AI, although still in its beta phase, has been available for over a month. Its notable characteristics are its newfound utility and its occasionally sluggish response times. Initially skeptical of AI assistants, I was pleasantly surprised when Siri accurately informed me about a hotel reservation and its proximity to an appointment in San Francisco. This efficiency was particularly appreciated during a 10K run, where manually retrieving this information would have been cumbersome.

Over recent months, I’ve increasingly relied on Siri AI for retrieving details like a plumber’s contact information or a PR person’s name—information I could find myself but now prefer Siri to handle. This marks a significant improvement from the past 15 years, where my expectations of Siri often led to disappointment.

Despite these advancements, Apple is catching up to what AI assistants should achieve by 2024.

Building an Agent Harness for Siri: Apple’s Next AI Challenge

The AI market is increasingly leaning towards agentic assistants, with companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and xAI innovating beyond simple query responses to executing tasks on behalf of users. My experiences with tools like ChatGPT and Codex have been transformative, as they manage tasks involving files and interacting with online services with what feels like magic.

However, each time ChatGPT accomplishes a task, Siri AI feels reminiscent of its older, less capable version. The rapid advancement of agentic capabilities by AI labs highlights Apple’s slower pace, tied to its annual software release cycle.

Yet, Apple might have a unique edge in addressing a critical limitation of today’s agentic assistants. While tools like Codex and ChatGPT Work depend on user-provided permissions and context, they lack intrinsic understanding of user activity and needs. The next leap in AI utility will likely stem from improved real-time contextual understanding.

Apple, with its longstanding focus on privacy, is well-positioned to leverage this advantage. Recent Apple Watch features like Siri Recap and Live Rewind demonstrate Apple’s willingness to explore the integration of personal context while addressing privacy implications.

These features utilize the Apple Watch’s microphone to capture environmental information, offering Siri a new depth of personal context. While privacy concerns are significant, Apple’s commitment to privacy, as seen in its Reference Image system, may ease these challenges.

In the evolving landscape of agentic assistants, the critical factor may shift from AI capabilities to the extent of user information they can access. Imagine an assistant that proactively understands and acts on your needs. Such advancements could render current tools as limited as the older Siri.

Although Apple has ground to cover in developing these capabilities, its strengthened position suggests it may compete effectively in the next AI phase.
