“Apps are not being used for this hantavirus outbreak,” Emily Gurley, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University, explained in an email response to WIRED. “The number of cases is low, and it is important to accurately trace all contacts to stop transmission.”
In smaller-scale infections like this, authorities must begin with the source — an infected individual — and proceed methodically, confirming their contacts and locations. Data from apps would not provide the precision necessary for such a targeted approach, as the information can be too broad and imprecise in detailing virus transmission paths.

While contact tracing apps provide valuable information, they also raise significant privacy concerns due to the continuous access required for accurate functioning. Moreover, maintaining accuracy has been challenging, with some instances leading to false negatives or positives, which do not contribute effectively to understanding virus spread.

Especially in the case of hantavirus, where every individual on a cruise ship can theoretically be directly tracked and contacted, the painstaking person-to-person tracing method is preferred. “During small but very deadly outbreaks, greater precision is needed,” Gurley emphasized.
