In response to the escalating heat crisis, Google Research is pioneering AI-based tools designed to decrease city temperatures and protect communities. These thermal resilience tools utilize AI applied to high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery to help cities assess the impact of targeted cooling interventions. In 2024, Google piloted this approach in 14 cities, supplying them with roof reflectivity data to pinpoint highly susceptible neighborhoods and identify where cool roofs would most effectively lower temperatures.
