Unlocking Health Insights: Estimating Advanced Walking Metrics with Smartwatches

Gait metrics—measures such as gait speed, step length, and double-stand time (i.e., the proportion of the gait cycle when both feet are on the ground)—are known to be critical biomarkers for assessing a person’s overall health, fall risk, and progression of neurological or musculoskeletal disorders. Analyzing how a person walks, known as gait analysis, offers valuable, non-invasive information about general well-being, injuries, and health problems.

The Evolution of Gait Analysis

Historically, gait measurement required expensive and specialized laboratory equipment, making continuous monitoring impractical. While smartphones now offer a wearable alternative using their built-in inertial measurement units (IMUs), they require precise placement, such as a thigh pocket or belt, to achieve the most accurate results. On the other hand, connected watches are worn on the wrist in a fixed location. This provides a much more convenient and consistent platform for continuous tracking, even expanding the tracking window to phone-free scenarios, like walking around the house.

Smartwatches: Bridging the Gap in Gait Analysis

Despite this crucial logistical advantage, smartwatches historically lag behind smartphones when it comes to comprehensively evaluating gait metrics. In our work “Smartwatch-Based Walking Metrics Estimation”, we sought to fill this gap. We demonstrated that consumer smartwatches provide a highly viable, accurate, and reliable platform for estimating a comprehensive suite of spatiotemporal gait metrics, with performance comparable to smartphone-based methods.

Smartwatches are increasingly being recognized for their potential in health monitoring. The convenience of wearing a watch on the wrist cannot be overstated, especially when considering the accuracy needed for health-related metrics. These devices are not only more accessible but also facilitate a seamless integration into daily life, allowing for more natural and continuous data collection.

Implications for Healthcare and Beyond

The implications of using smartwatches for gait analysis are vast. For individuals, this means better tracking and management of their health using devices they already own. For healthcare providers, it offers a new avenue for monitoring patients remotely, potentially leading to early detection of health issues and more personalized care strategies.

The availability of this technology aligns with the growing trend towards personalized medicine and preventive healthcare. By leveraging consumer electronics like smartwatches, we can democratize access to health insights, empowering users with information that was once confined to clinical settings.

With further research and development, the potential applications of smartwatch-based gait analysis can extend beyond personal health to include sports science, rehabilitation, and elder care. The ability to monitor and analyze walking patterns continuously opens doors to novel interventions and improvements in quality of life for diverse populations.
