In the second tier, human baselines are collected for the same tasks from a demographically representative sample of adults. This step is vital as it provides a benchmark against which AI performance can be measured, ensuring that comparisons are both fair and meaningful.

Tier 3: Mapping AI Performance to Human Distribution

The final tier involves mapping the performance of each AI system relative to the distribution of human performance in each skill area. This mapping provides a clear visualization of where AI stands in relation to human capabilities, highlighting areas of strength and those needing improvement.

From Theory to Practice

While defining these cognitive skills is a crucial first step, transforming theory into practice is essential for tangible progress. To this end, a new Kaggle hackathon, “Measuring Progress Towards AGI: Cognitive Capabilities,” is being launched. This event invites the community to design assessments for five cognitive skills where the assessment gap is most significant: learning, metacognition, attention, executive functions, and social cognition.

Participants will have the opportunity to use Kaggle’s newly launched Community Benchmarks platform to build and test their assessments against a variety of boundary models. This innovative platform provides a valuable space for experimentation and learning.

Incentives and Participation Details

To encourage wide participation, the hackathon offers a total prize pool of $200,000. The top two entries in each of the five tracks will receive $10,000 awards, with $25,000 grand prizes for the four absolute best overall entries.
