Open source startup GitHits closes €1.5M pre-seed funding for product development

GitHits Raises €1.5 Million in Pre-Seed Funding to Launch “Google Search Code”

Based in Finland, GitHits has successfully secured €1.5 million in pre-seed funding. This fresh influx of capital will be directed towards the development of what the company describes as the “Google search code.” This innovative tool aims to index all public open source code, providing an invaluable resource for developers globally.

The funding round saw participation from prominent investors, including Finnish venture capital firm Vendep Capital, Estonian investment firm Trind, and a host of renowned angel investors such as Peter Sarlin, Zach Shelby, and Jerry Liu.

Launching the Beta Version

“With this funding, we are launching the beta version of the product today, and the first commercial version later this year,” announced CEO Jaakko Timonen. Founded in 2025, GitHits enters a robust European and Finnish funding landscape, which has been notably active through 2026, particularly in sectors related to developer infrastructure, AI-assisted software engineering, and software supply chain management.

An Expanding Ecosystem

The Finnish tech scene is witnessing a surge in investments. For instance, Tangled, a Finnish startup developing a social code collaboration platform, raised €3.8 million in March 2026. Similarly, Helsinki-based Avrea, known for their AI-native CI/CD platform for AI-generated code, secured a €4 million pre-seed round last month. Furthermore, Cambridge-based Undo recently closed a €31 million funding round to broaden its market reach and accelerate development efforts.

Filling a Market Void

“OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have left a void in the market. GitHits does not compete with Codex, Claude Code, or Cursor, but complements them by providing open source code as a context for agents to end retry loops and reduce token consumption,” explained CTO Olli-Pekka Heinisuo.

Heinisuo, a notable figure in the open source community, previously developed opencv-python, a widely-used software package with over 100 million downloads, which even NASA utilized in its Mars Ingenuity helicopter project.

Investing in Expertise

Timo Félin, a partner at Vendep Capital, emphasized the importance of investing in the right team. “We’d been looking at GitHits since it was just an idea, and what sold us was the team that formed around it. Olli-Pekka is a quiet open source legend and has been dealing with this problem for years. At this point, you invest in people, and it was an easy decision,” Félin stated.

Origin and Vision

The concept for GitHits emerged while Heinisuo was working at AI consulting firm Softlandia. He identified a recurring problem—colleagues struggling to find open source code information—often requiring manual research. Recognizing this as a challenge that could be addressed with artificial intelligence, the idea for GitHits was born.

GitHits offers AI coding agents a suite of tools to locate functional examples of open source implementations and scrutinize software components, including dependencies and vulnerabilities. To achieve this, GitHits is developing an AI-native, version-aware index that encompasses all public open source code.
