Leadership Changes at OpenAI: Johannes Heidecke Steps Down
Head of OpenAI Johannes Heidecke told Safety Systems employees this week that he is leaving the company, WIRED has learned. Heidecke’s departure follows a restructuring aimed at integrating OpenAI’s security and research teams.
Organizational Restructuring and New Leadership
In a memo to employees seen by WIRED, Chief Research Officer Mark Chen explained that OpenAI’s security teams will now report to the company’s vice president of research and head of direction, Mia Glaese. Glaese will take on an expanded role as vice president of research and security. Saachi Jain, who previously led security teams at OpenAI, is appointed the company’s interim head of security systems, reporting to Glaese.
“Security requirements continue to increase – we are training models at a much faster pace, and release cycles have in turn shortened significantly,” Chen stated in the memo. “As a result, we now face greater security coordination challenges than ever before.”
Heidecke’s Tenure and Contributions
Heidecke joined OpenAI in 2021 as an AI security analyst. He assumed leadership of the security systems in 2024 after the previous leader, Lilian Weng, left to co-found the Thinking Machines Lab with other OpenAI researchers.
“We are grateful to Johannes for his contribution to OpenAI,” Chen expressed in a statement to WIRED. “It is important that our safety work is integrated into frontier model development and plays an earlier and more direct role in shaping key model, product and go-to-market decisions. We look forward to this next chapter under Mia Glaese’s leadership in research and safety.”
Challenges with New AI Models
Heidecke’s departure coincides with OpenAI’s efforts to bring increasingly powerful AI models to market. Earlier this week, the company launched GPT-5.6, its most powerful model yet for agent coding tasks. However, according to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 exhibited concerning forms of misbehavior compared to earlier models.
Recent Departures and Strategic Shifts
Heidecke is the latest security-focused leader to bid farewell to OpenAI in recent days. Earlier this week, Joshua Achiam, OpenAI’s chief futurist, informed his colleagues of his departure after nine years of research in security.
It’s not just OpenAI’s security teams undergoing changes. Earlier this week, Fidji Simo, CEO of OpenAI for AGI deployment, announced her resignation after an extended absence due to illness. The company stated that Greg Brockman will continue to lead OpenAI’s product teams and will additionally oversee the go-to-market strategy.
