Expanding Reach and Enhancing Care
Theris collaborates with both behavioral health providers and partner organizations, operating in eight states with particular emphasis on memory care and substance use disorders. Notably, the Department of Veterans Affairs ranks among its largest clients. The platform employs AI to extract digital biomarkers from vocal rhythms and microfacial expressions during sessions, enhancing treatment recommendations. According to Theris, AI-assisted sessions achieve a remarkable 94% diagnostic accuracy compared to traditional human assessments.

Path to FDA Approval and Autonomous Care
Looking ahead, Theris aims to evolve into an FDA Class II medical device, capable of autonomous psychology and psychiatry. Capone envisions that AI-assisted psychotherapy and psychiatry will soon be reimbursable by both commercial and government insurers, providing patients an alternative to traditional therapy. To train providers, Theris has developed an AI patient avatar that simulates complex psychiatric scenarios, enhancing clinician preparedness.
Patient consent is paramount; less than 1% of Theris patients refuse session recording, assured by the company’s stringent data privacy protocols. Anonymized sessions, comprising over 150,000 hours of clinical encounters, train Theris’ AI models. Capone points out that these models prioritize patient goals over traditional outcome questionnaires, aligning more closely with genuine quality of life improvements.
Integrating AI with Human Expertise
Theris’ AI models, based on the open-source Qwen core model and tailored for specific diagnostics, operate on the company’s servers. The platform supports billing by generating structured clinical notes that integrate seamlessly with various EHRs, addressing common insurance reimbursement challenges faced by providers.
Beyond session insights, Theris captures vital signs through video analysis and maintains daily patient engagement with health check-ins. Since its inception, the startup has garnered undisclosed funding and expanded its reach to diverse care settings, including veterans’ homes and schools.
Recently, a Theris affiliate practice group joined the CMS ACCESS model, aligning with value-based behavioral health care initiatives.
