Expanding AI’s Role in Healthcare: Beth Israel Lahey Health Adopts Heidi’s AI Scribe
After a successful six-month pilot, Boston-based Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) is expanding the use of Heidi’s AI writing technology to all of its physicians across the health system. This move signifies a strategic advancement in integrating AI tools to enhance healthcare delivery and physician well-being.
Successful Pilot and Positive Feedback
The deployment follows a test phase where the AI Scribe was offered to 1,000 providers. According to the organizations, the results were overwhelmingly positive, with 89% of users expressing satisfaction with the grade quality. Furthermore, 90% of providers felt more present with their patients, 82% experienced a reduced cognitive load, and 74% noted a decrease in time spent outside of work hours.
Dr. Thomas Kelly, CEO and co-founder of Heidi, highlighted the importance of user-centered design in fostering adoption, stating, “By focusing on the end-user experience and focusing on true adoption rather than prescriptive implementation, you can make a meaningful difference in a clinician’s daily life.” He emphasized the value of adaptable solutions over one-size-fits-all approaches.
Organic Adoption and Tailored Solutions
Executives at BILH have reported that the majority adoption of the AI tool was achieved organically, without mandating its use. This success is attributed to the technology’s adaptability to individual doctor preferences and workflows.
The organizations assert that the program’s success demonstrates the significant impact ambient AI tools can have in reducing burnout and enhancing the work experience for healthcare providers. With the expansion, 6,000 providers across BILH’s 14 hospitals and 175 practices will now have access to Heidi’s ambient AI scribing capabilities.
Global Reach and Multifunctional Capabilities
Heidi, based in Australia, supports over 2 million consultations weekly in 116 countries and 110 languages. Beyond transcription services, the AI scribe enables providers to review patient history and notes prior to appointments, with information seamlessly integrated into electronic health records (EHRs) and automation of codes and tasks.

Addressing Physician Burnout
The initiative comes at a crucial time, as physician burnout remains a significant issue despite peaking during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent estimates suggest that more than half of surgeons and primary care physicians in the U.S. continue to experience burnout. An American Medical Association (AMA) survey of nearly 19,000 physicians revealed that 41.9% reported at least one burnout symptom in 2025, slightly down from 43.2% the previous year.
