CMS goes live with the GLP-1 Bridge program for Part D beneficiaries

The Trump Administration Introduces GLP-1 Coverage for Medicare Enrollees

The Trump administration has officially launched its new “bridge” model, offering GLP-1 coverage for weight loss to Medicare enrollees. Eligible individuals enrolled in Medicare Part D can now access specific GLP-1 medications for weight loss or control at a cost of $50 per month. This initiative will be in place until the end of 2027, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Overview of the GLP-1 Bridge Program

Under the GLP-1 Bridge program, the government will cover the cost of extended coverage for these medications. Additionally, CMS has proposed a second approach—Better Approaches to Lifestyle and Nutrition for Comprehensive Health (BALANCE)—aimed at negotiating lower GLP-1 prices in exchange for standardized coverage options.

However, plans related to the model faced challenges, leading CMS to postpone the planned start date of January 2027 indefinitely. A similar model was implemented in Medicaid in May 2026.

Administrator’s Call to Action

In a CMS announcement marking the launch of the model, Administrator Mehmet Oz, MD, encouraged beneficiaries to contact their doctors to determine their eligibility. “For too long, many Americans have not had access to these treatments because of cost,” Oz stated.

The press release notes that individuals who already have access to GLP-1 through their Medicare drug benefit or are currently eligible for the Part D drugs will not be eligible to participate in the bridge program.

Participation from Pharmaceutical Companies

Both Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk, producers of popular GLP-1 drugs, are participating in the model. Novo Nordisk announced that the program’s provision of Wegovy “provides a new avenue of access for millions of older adults living with obesity.” Eligible Part D participants will have access to Wegovy injections and pills priced at $50.

Novo Nordisk is actively collaborating with the agency, healthcare professionals, pharmacists, and patient groups to ensure eligible individuals have access to GLP-1 when needed. “For many older Americans living with obesity, this is a moment they and their families have been waiting for,” Jamey Millar, executive vice president of U.S. operations at Novo Nordisk, expressed.

Similarly, Eli Lilly announced that both Foundayo and Zepbound will be available through the program. Ilya Yuffa, executive vice president and president of Lilly USA and Global Customer Capabilities, estimated that 20 million Medicare recipients would meet clinical criteria for weight loss medications.

“For many, this is the first time that obesity treatment is within reach,” Yuffa noted.

Pharmacy Chains’ Role and Support

Major pharmacies and retailers are also preparing to participate in the program. Walgreens announced its readiness to support patients at its nearly 8,000 pharmacies across the country. The pharmacy chain offers assistance in connecting individuals interested in obtaining a GLP-1 through the bridge program with providers who can assess their eligibility.

“Walgreens’ trusted pharmacists are trained to help patients meet eligibility requirements and stay on track with treatment,” Rick Gates, chief pharmacy officer at Walgreens, mentioned. “Every patient’s weight loss journey is different, and our pharmacists are here to help when a patient is considering GLP-1 therapy for the first time.”

CVS Pharmacy echoed similar sentiments, stating that those who are ineligible can access several copay assistance programs accepted at CVS pharmacies.

Additional Support from Walmart and Sam’s Club

In anticipation of the bridge model, Walmart and Sam’s Club have expanded their support to Medicare enrollees who may be eligible for GLP-1. Kevin Host, senior vice president of health and wellness at Walmart, emphasized that additional support for weight management aligns with the team’s broader mission. “Our Walmart mantra simply helps people save money and live better,” Host stated.
