Smart smoke detectors work similarly to conventional smoke detectors: They sound an alarm when smoke or fire is recognized, giving however many advance notifications occur for occupants to empty in case of a house fire.

Some smart smoke detectors can likewise inform you when the battery gets low or on the other hand assuming there is an issue with the sensors in the unit. It’s because intelligent smoke detectors will also sound the alarm, but will also transmit a signal to the cloud, alerting you on your smartphone.

While there aren’t many standalone smart smoke detectors available, you can utilize smart speakers to monitor for the sound of smoke detectors going off and then have Alexa or Google Assistant warn you.

Google Nest Protect Smart smoke detector

Smart smoke detectors

Google Nest’s smoke alarm monitors both smoke and carbon monoxide. Also, if it detects either, it will not only sound the alarm but will also inform you which room the warning is originating from and what the nature of the alert is. An LED ring at the bottom of the alarm changes color as well, providing a visual signal.

The Nest Protect is available in both wire and lithium-ion battery configurations. If you have more than one, and one goes off, the others will go off as well, alerting you to the location of the fire.

The Nest Protect is also compatible with a broad variety of smart-home devices. In the case of an emergency, for example, the Nest can automatically switch on your lights. Thus making it simpler for you to exit your home. This, however, only applies to people who have not yet changed their Nest account to a Google Home account. It also does not operate with Alexa natively.

Roost Smart Battery

For those who currently have smoke alarms and wish to make them “smart,” the Roost battery is indeed the best — if not the only — choice. That’s because the Roost battery, which uses WiFi, sends a notification to your smartphone when the siren sounds. The 2nd Gen battery looks and operates the same as the first, but it is considerably easier to set up.

You may mute the alarm for up to 2 minutes and automatically transmit an alert to someone else using the app, which can support a huge number of linked batteries. It does not, however, work with IFTTT or any other smart home system to, for example, switch on your lights when your alarm goes off.

The battery will last up to 3 to 5 years and is compatible with any smoke/CO alarm that uses a 9-volt battery, including hard-wired devices with a 9V battery backup.

Roost has upgraded its app to notify users when there is a severe thunderstorms alert, such as hail, freezing weather, heavy rains and snow, storms, and high winds.

Onelink safe n sound

The OneLink Safe & Sound smart smoke detector, like the Nest Protect, detects fire and carbon monoxide, sends an alarm to your smartphone and informs you of the nature and location of the fire or situation. However, when it is not warning you of a fire, it may be for a variety of different purposes. The Safe & Sound can play music, listen to audiobooks, and access Alexa’s hundreds of skills thanks to Amazon‘s Alexa.

The Safe & Sound, on the other hand, requires a hard-wired link, and we discovered that the position of these connections isn’t ideal for fully utilizing Alexa’s capabilities.

The 2nd Gen Onelink Smart Smoke + Carbon Monoxide alarm is available in both battery and hardwired versions. The Onelink, like the Nest Protect, will not only sound an alarm but will also indicate the room impacted and the kind of alert: smoke or carbon monoxide. If you have more than one Onelink alarm, you may link them so that if one goes off, they all go off, just like the Nest Protect.

An LED in the center of the alarm rings and changes color depending on the condition of the alert. Green and blue signify that the alarm is getting set up or that it is in pairing mode. A yellow light indicates a failure or a low battery, whereas a red light indicates a fire or smoke condition.

Onelink’s alarm uses photoelectric tech, which is typically more effective at detecting smoldering flames than ionization technology. The latter, on the other hand, are better at spotting fast-burning flames.

Because the Onelink is compatible with HomeKit and Alexa, you can ask Siri and Amazon‘s voice command for the status of the smoke detector, not much else. In contrast, if the Nest Protect senses fire or carbon monoxide, you may have it turn on a surveillance video. Also, you can open Lutron blinds, switch on Philips Hue lighting, turn off your heat, and do many other things.

The setup should be simple but it takes a few tries to get it to work. The Onelink smoke and carbon monoxide detector are adequate on their own. However, Nest Protect performs better for the same price.

This way, you may maintain your older smoke detectors while still receiving notifications on your phone if something goes wrong while you’re gone.

The Echo Dot is available in three models. The fourth-generation Echo Dot ($49), the fourth-generation Echo Dot with Clock ($59), and the third-generation Echo Dot ($29).

Conclusion

It’s also appreciable that it runs a self-check once a month and that you can it to other Nest Protects. It also includes a 10-year battery.

If you don’t want to pay more than $100 on a smart smoke alarm, the Roost Smart Battery is a good option. This 9-volt Wi-Fi-enabled battery fits into any smoke detector and sends an alert to your smartphone. However, it cannot be directly linked to any other smart home gadgets.
