Gemini Overlay Introduces Multitasking Feature with Floating Bubble Shortcut
The Gemini overlay on Android has recently rolled out an innovative multitasking feature, offering users enhanced convenience through a floating bubble shortcut when minimized. This update aims to streamline user interactions and enhance the multitasking capabilities of the Android platform.
The new Gemini overlay presents a “Minimize” button prominently positioned above the container. This button appears centered immediately after a user enters a prompt, while the pill-shaped container is displayed on the right after the response. This functionality effectively collapses the overlay into a compact bubble featuring the spark logo, allowing users to multitask with ease. Google explains the process succinctly: “Gemini is still available while you multitask. Tap to expand. Drag to move or dismiss.”
However, the Gemini bubble is currently restricted to six predefined positions and cannot be freely positioned anywhere on the screen. Additionally, users have reported a bug that resets the bubble to the bottom-right corner after each minimization, which might require attention in future updates.
Once the response has fully loaded, users can tap outside the sheet to revert to the bubble, providing a seamless transition. Utilizing the system back gesture will close the entire overlay, while users also have the option to drag the bubble to dismiss it. This shortcut significantly reduces the time required to navigate back to a conversation, compared to opening the Gemini app and then accessing the side panel.
For those who prefer a more comprehensive experience, Android 17’s system Bubble option can be used in conjunction with the Gemini app, further enhancing the user experience.
