Google Health 5.0: A New Era for Health Monitoring
As telegraphed, Google Health is now rolling out as an update to the Fitbit app. On Android, Google Health 5.0 introduces a new homescreen Quick Access Widget, marking a significant shift in how users can interact with their health data.
Enhanced User Interface
This update replaces the circular Steps widget with what’s essentially the focus section at the top of the Today tab. This new widget is designed to mirror the stats you’ve set, offering a more personalized and integrated experience. The max homescreen layout is 5×3, with the Quick Access Widget surfacing up to six different metrics. Users have the flexibility to remove certain elements like the Steps or Weekly cardio ring for a more streamlined interface. A simple tap takes users to the full stats page, and the widget can also be resized to show only one stat if desired.
The heart icon located in the top-left corner acts as a gateway to the app, while quick access to the Health Coach and refresh options are conveniently placed on the right. The widget also displays the most recent update time in the center, ensuring users are always up-to-date.
Branding and Compatibility Updates
This release also introduces the new Google Health icon, signifying a shift in branding. The Fitbit name is now reserved exclusively for hardware, reflecting Google’s broader vision for its health platform. With Version 5.0, users can prepare to set up the Fitbit Air when it launches next week. The rollout of the Google Health app began on May 19 and is expected to be fully available by May 26.
