Exploring the Role of Digital Health Tools in Managing Psychosis: Insights from UK Mental Health Staff
Psychosis, a severe mental health condition, poses a significant public health challenge, with treatment often being delayed and less effective than desired. As the digital age progresses, Digital Health Tools (DHTs) have emerged as a promising avenue to support healthcare delivery and enable self-management for individuals with psychosis. This article delves into a study aimed at understanding healthcare staff’s perspectives on implementing these tools to address unmet needs while maintaining trust among patients, services, and the public.
Methods and Analysis
To gather essential insights, a carefully tailored survey was developed to address critical questions about the implementation and acceptability of DHTs for Severe Mental Illness (SMI). This survey was distributed online across 31 National Health Service (NHS) sites in the UK, targeting mental health workers who are on the frontline of psychosis treatment.
Revealing Results
With 352 completed surveys, the findings were enlightening. A substantial majority (74.2%) of the staff expressed a desire to incorporate DHTs into clinical practice. However, when it came to remote digital monitoring, there was a noticeable preference for active symptom monitoring over passive sensing. Staff members were more comfortable tracking emotions or general health status compared to monitoring behavior or location of service users.
Discussion: Uncovering New Insights
This survey, the first of its kind on a national scale in the UK, shed light on the perspectives of employees regarding digital mental health technologies for psychosis. It highlighted staff views on utilizing smartphone apps and wearables for remote monitoring and passive sensing, offering a fresh understanding of the potential and challenges associated with these technologies. Future research is essential to refine implementation strategies and overcome barriers, ensuring these tools are feasible, acceptable, user-friendly, safe, and effective.
