JioHotstar Expands Globally: A New Era for Indian Streaming
JioHotstar, the streaming platform controlled by Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, is taking its brand outside India for the first time and will replace Hotstar in the U.K., Canada, and Singapore as it begins a wider global push.
JioHotstar’s Global Launch: A New Chapter
The move marks a significant milestone for JioHotstar, which boasts more than 500 million monthly active users in India. The service will debut internationally offering over 160,000 hours of entertainment content, although it will notably exclude live sports such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) and other major cricket events that are pivotal to its Indian audience. This decision stems from existing content agreements, but JioStar hasn’t ruled out the possibility of including sports content in future offerings.
The Impact of a Sports-Free Debut
The absence of sports at its global debut is a notable shift from JioHotstar’s offerings in India. In its home market, sports draw substantial audiences, with the platform streaming major cricket events, the English Premier League, and domestic sports leagues. The decision to omit sports content in the initial launch phase aims to align with current licensing agreements while still delivering a robust entertainment library.
Transition from Hotstar to JioHotstar
Starting September 2, Hotstar will “cease to exist” in the U.K., Canada, and Singapore, with JioHotstar taking its place. Existing Hotstar users in these regions can transition seamlessly using their current login credentials on the new JioHotstar app, available on the App Store and Google Play Store, as well as on connected TVs.
Past and Future International Endeavors
Hotstar has previously operated in international markets, including a now-defunct standalone service in the U.S. Despite this, JioHotstar doesn’t plan to re-enter the U.S. market immediately. The company envisions gradual expansion into additional overseas markets, reflecting an ambitious long-term strategic vision.
Diverse Content for a Global Audience
At launch, JioHotstar will feature a rich array of Indian films, TV originals, and reality shows such as “Bigg Boss,” along with live TV channels under the Star brand. The platform offers content in 12 languages, including English, Hindi, and regional dialects, with available dubs and translations to cater to diverse audiences.
A Strategic Partnership and Market Potential
In 2024, Reliance merged its media assets with Disney, forming an $8.5 billion joint venture. This alliance led to the merging of Hotstar and JioCinema, creating JioHotstar, which dominated 85% of India’s streaming market. Now, according to data from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, JioHotstar’s global target audience could exceed 4 million people across the U.K., Canada, and Singapore, with potential to appeal to the wider South Asian diaspora.
Pricing and Subscription Details
JioHotstar’s pricing strategy is region-specific: in the U.K., subscriptions are priced at £19.99 quarterly and £69.99 annually. In Canada, costs are CA$19.99 quarterly and CA$49.99 annually, while in Singapore, it’s SG$29.98 quarterly and SG$69.98 annually. These prices align closely with former Hotstar subscriptions; however, sports content will require additional services.
In contrast, JioHotstar’s Indian subscriptions start as low as ₹79 monthly for single-device viewing, with a top-tier annual plan at ₹2,199.
The Vision Forward
Amit Malhotra, JioStar’s Head of International Business, emphasizes the strategic aim to cater to a broad, underserved global audience, highlighting the potential to connect with viewers seeking diverse cultural narratives.
