In a significant move, the FIDO Alliance, with initial contributions from Google and Mastercard, announced the formation of two working groups. These groups are tasked with developing industry standards for validating and securing payments and other transactions conducted by AI agents.
Setting a Protective Baseline Across Industries
The initiative aims to establish a protective baseline adaptable across various industries. This would enable users to authorize agent actions through mechanisms that are resistant to forgery or unauthorized takeovers by malicious actors. The standards will incorporate cryptographic tools allowing digital services to verify that agents execute authenticated users’ instructions accurately and legally. Privacy protection frameworks will empower users, merchants, and service providers to authenticate agent-initiated transactions, aiming to prevent agent hijacking and fraudulent activities while ensuring transparency and providing recourse options during disputes.
Addressing New Paradigms in AI Agent Interactions
“Agents are becoming more common and mainstream, yet existing models aren’t designed for this paradigm—they weren’t created to account for user-delegated actions,” says Andrew Shikiar, CEO of the FIDO Alliance, as reported by WIRED.
Reflecting on past challenges, Shikiar adds: “Looking at our work on passwords, which became a significant issue decades ago, the security foundation for our connected economy wasn’t prepared. Now, with agents and their interactions, we have an opportunity to avoid similar pitfalls and establish core principles for more trustworthy interactions.”
Accelerating the Standardization Process
Creating cross-industry technical standards that promote interoperability is a time-intensive task, typically spanning several years. However, given the swift development and adoption of agent AI, FIDO Alliance, Google, and Mastercard stress the need for expedited progress. To this end, both companies contribute open-source tools to the initiative. Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) provides a cryptographic verification mechanism for confirming user intent behind agent-initiated transactions. Mastercard’s Verifiable Intent framework, co-developed with Google, offers a secure method for users to authorize and control agent actions.
Ensuring Privacy and Transaction Transparency
“We aim to provide cryptographic proof of user-authorized transactions while allowing for selective disclosure,” explains Stavan Parikh, vice president and general manager of payments at Google. “Different ecosystem actors—platforms, merchants, payment providers, networks—access only relevant information, ensuring the correct action occurs at the right time. Payments present a complex ecosystem challenge.”
Parikh illustrates with a scenario where a consumer instructs an AI agent to purchase a specific pair of sneakers when back in stock and priced at $100 or less. The objective is to authenticate and provide transparency around this transaction, ensuring the consumer receives the desired product at the intended price during a perfect sneaker drop.
Building Trust in AI-Powered Tools
Establishing these foundational safeguards is crucial for fostering trust in agent AI and promoting the adoption of AI-driven tools, emphasizes Parikh. Regardless of users’ willingness to adopt AI capabilities, the reality of their widespread presence necessitates minimum protective measures.
