A Sale That Never Turned Into an Offer
Samsung launched the Galaxy Z TriFold in South Korea in December 2025 and brought it to the United States on January 30, 2026, starting at $2,899 for the 512GB Crafted Black model. Products online sell out quickly, often within minutes, and Samsung’s own store always greets buyers with a “sold out” banner instead of a restock date. Buyers who missed a drop continued to cool on a stock that rarely lasted.
The request felt like the start of a flagship product. Instead, Samsung treated each restock as a countdown rather than a ramp, and in March the company confirmed that it was ending sales in Korea first and then in the United States once stocks were depleted.
Samsung Built a Statement, Not a Must-Have
The TriFold has always been a proof of concept more than a product line. It folds twice into a 10-inch tablet, runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, packs a 200MP camera, and measures 3.9mm at its thinnest point, with a 5,600mAh battery spread across its three panels. Each of these specs costs money, and Samsung reportedly won’t be able to make the math work on a large scale.
This is what is missing from the newspaper headlines. A phone can make headlines, sell out instantly, and still be a losing product if each unit costs too much to build. Samsung got the attention it wanted, then closed the door before the economic situation turned against it.
Foldables have always carried a tension between spectacle and resistance. The TriFold took it to the extreme by combining a truly new form factor with a price and offering that was never meant to last.
The Resale Market Has Filled the Void
Rarity did what rarity always does. With no restock in sight, used TriFolds began trading well above the list, ranging between $3,500 and $4,400 on secondary markets, and Korean quotes climbed even higher. Some sellers have thrown out numbers that no rational buyer should touch.
Paying a high premium for an abandoned phone is a red flag in itself. Samsung continues to send it software updates, so support isn’t an issue, but the resale value of a phone the manufacturer has stopped selling is shaky, and repairs only get more difficult once production ends. The resale frenzy is less a sign of value than the symptom of a deliberately limited series.
What the Next Foldable Should Learn
As Samsung takes the stage at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22 to showcase its upcoming foldables, the TriFold’s short lifespan is a warning for the entire category, not just Samsung. A one-of-a-kind form factor can gain goodwill and prove that an idea works, but that goodwill quickly fades when buyers realize the phone was never meant to stay.
The next triple, from Samsung or anyone else, has to answer a question that TriFold has dodged: Can you build this at a price that real people will pay, in numbers that they can actually get? Samsung already seems stuck on it. Reports released in mid-July 2026 indicate that the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 is likely delayed due to the same rising component costs, with a slider phone possibly arriving first. Until a foldable product crosses that mark, the headlines will continue to obscure a product that has struggled on its own terms.
